Maintenance tips for a longer battery life

The health of your batteries will allow you to be ready to Discover Living when, and how you planned.  You can influence your batteries life span by doing basic care.

Do regular self-inspections for signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks. Check the terminals and cables for tightness and cleanliness. Clean any visible corrosion with a mixture of baking soda and water and tighten any loose connections.

Treat your battery with care when you use it and recharge the battery promptly after use.   Deep discharge as little as possible.  Avoid leaving the battery in a deeply discharged state for extended periods.

Keep the battery adequately charged, especially if you are not adventuring regularly.  Use a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep the battery topped up during periods of inactivity.  When charging the battery, use a charger specifically designed for the 12V battery you have.  and do follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding charging voltage and current (they know what they are doing)!  Avoid overcharging or undercharging the battery, as this can damage it.

Extreme temperatures can affect battery performance and lifespan. Our sun can be brutal so try to protect the battery from excessive heat.  Down south with the cold weather you also need to take care.

Take the time to periodically check your charging ecosystem (the alternator, the solar controller, any voltage regulator, and all the related components) to ensure they are functioning as they should.  We want to avoid undercharging or overcharging of the battery and a malfunctioning charging system can lead to this happening causing premature battery failure.

Every good battery manufacturer will have maintenance procedures and time intervals for their different types of batteries.  By following all these maintenance tips, you can help prolong the life of your 12V battery and ensure that it remains in optimal condition for reliable adventuring.
