Deep cycle or Lithium?

Deep cycle or Lithium?

Make an informed decision.

There are a lot of different brands and chemical compositions of batteries on the market. Some motorhomes come standard with one relatively low amp hour battery, this will probably be a 50/50 (dual purpose battery). This does the job but is ultimately not suited to the way we use motorhomes in New Zealand (lots more off grid camping than overseas). A true deep cycle battery is designed to cycle many times and give a comparatively lower output over a longer time compared to a starting battery which is designed to give a higher (cranking the engine) output over a shorter time. Lead acid batteries can be prone to sulphating if left in a partial or discharged state. This is where the plates clog up (effectively reducing the internal surface area) which reduces its capacity.

Lithium batteries will hold their voltage until discharged. Lead acid battery voltage will fall proportionately with discharge. Lithium batteries are about half the weight of lead acid batteries. Lithium batteries are also not prone to sulphating like lead acid batteries.

Battery Town Endurant commercial and deep cycle batteries carry a 24 month warranty from date of purchase with the Endurant automotive batteries carrying a 36 month warranty. The Enerdrive Lithium battery is 5 years. What is key with all battery warranties is to use and treat your batteries with how they were intended to be used rather than on the length of time you have had them. Batteries have different cycle lives and it depends on how they are used - the depth of discharge is directly proportional to the amount of cycles you can get out of the battery. One battery cycle is classed from the unit being charged, discharged and then recharged.
